Fresh Air Falcons – Match Report

LEEK CSOB FALCONS 0 LEEK CSOB TIGERS 4

The Fresh Air foray into the world of football continued to build on its disastrous start with the fifth defeat in a row. This week’s match was a local derby between the Falcons and arch rivals, Tigers.

I’d like to say it was a game of two halves but it wasn’t. The lads were never really at the races. The odds were against them from the start as they faced an early training session at 8.15am on a Sunday morning – barely time to scoff the necessary 3 Weetabix required to perform at high level and they were at home, on their pitch that is not unlike K2, due to it’s steep slope.

From the kick off the Eagles were up for the fight. Schoolfriends became adversaries as the crunching tackles went in, followed by shoulder barges. At stake: bragging rights in the playground the next day. By half time, Falcons were rattled. 3-0 to Tigers, but they’ve been here before and have fought back to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.

Today it was not to be. Last year’s player of the season, Ash, was handed the number 1 shirt, and despite a valiant effort from everyone on the pitch, another goal was conceded. Heads dropped and spirit evaporated from the boys. A 4-0 defeat, yes, but as Fresh Air founder and Falcons fan admitted in the post match press conference, ‘Well, it’s an improvement on last week’.

The late, great Jimmy Greaves called football a funny old game. He was wrong. There’s nothing funny about a 4 – 0 thumping. But we continue…

Man of the match: Oscar Wainwright for his relentless defending and clearing of the lines.
